10 Things to Do in Kaikōura This Autumn

Crisp mornings, golden light, quieter days and plenty of reasons to slow down. Autumn is a beautiful time to discover Kaikōura.

As the days begin to cool and the pace of summer eases, Kaikōura takes on a different feel. There’s still plenty of adventure to be had, but autumn is also a season for taking your time – wandering a little further, lingering over lunch and discovering some of the quieter corners of our place.

Here are 10 things to add to your Kaikōura autumn list.

1. Warm up at The Sauna Project

There’s something incredibly satisfying about stepping from the cool autumn air into a traditional wood-fired sauna.

Perched on the Esplanade with uninterrupted views of the Pacific, the Sauna Project invites you to embrace the Scandinavian-inspired ritual of heat, cold and relaxation. Spend 15 minutes in the sauna, take an invigorating plunge in the ocean, then repeat the cycle as your body and mind completely unwind. The guided one-hour beachside experience is designed around wellness, connection and the restorative power of nature.

2. Head out in search of whales

Some experiences aren't seasonal in Kaikōura.

Our resident sperm whales can be encountered throughout the year, making autumn a great time to head offshore and experience one of Kaikōura's most iconic wildlife encounters.

Whether you see them from the water or take to the skies, seeing a whale against the backdrop of the Seaward Kaikōura Range is something pretty special.

Perfect for: Wildlife lovers | Families | First-time visitors

3. Zip through native forest

Swap the coastline for the trees and experience another side of Kaikōura.

Head inland for a zipline adventure through native forest, with mountain views, fresh autumn air and a good dose of adventure along the way.

It's a brilliant reminder that some of Kaikōura's best experiences happen away from the ocean too.

Perfect for: Families | Groups | Adventure seekers

4. Discover the stories along our coastline

Turn your journey along the Kaikōura coast into an experience of its own.

The Kaikōura Cultural Artwork Trail stretches for 60km along State Highway 1, from Oaro in the south to Waiau Toa (Clarence River) in the north. Along the way, seven safe stopping places invite you to pull over, take in the scenery and discover the stories of this remarkable coastline.

Look out for pouwhenua and tekoteko, murals, sculptures and native plantings that bring to life the stories, whakapapa and history of mana whenua. Created as part of the rebuild following the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake, the trail shares stories of Waitaha, Ngāti Māmoe, Ngāti Kurī and Ngāi Tahu through both traditional and contemporary art.

Don't rush the drive. Stop, explore, read the stories and see the Kaikōura coastline through a different lens.

5. Head for the hills

Kaikōura isn't just about the coast.

Autumn's cooler days make it a great time to head inland and explore our hills, forests and high country.

Lace up your boots for a walk, head off on a guided adventure or experience the landscape by 4WD. Whichever way you choose to explore, make sure you stop occasionally and look back towards the ocean.

The view is worth it.

6. Taste your way around Kaikōura

Autumn is a good season to slow things down – including lunch.

Find a cosy café, discover a local restaurant, enjoy fresh seafood or seek out some of the local producers adding their own flavour to Kaikōura.

There's something particularly good about spending the morning outdoors and then settling in somewhere warm with great food and nowhere else you need to be.

Perfect for: Foodies | Couples | Slow afternoons

7. Explore Kaikōura on two wheels

Swap four wheels for two and see where the trail takes you.

Autumn's cooler temperatures make it a great time to bike around Kaikōura, whether you're after an easy ride close to town or something a little more adventurous.

Take your time, stop for the views and add a coffee or lunch stop along the way.

Perfect for: Couples | Families | Active travellers

8. Find the perfect autumn sunset

Autumn light in Kaikōura can be pretty spectacular.

9. Take the scenic route

Sometimes getting here is part of the adventure.

Stop at the lookouts. Wander down to the beach. Take the photo. Have the coffee.

10. Stay for the stars

As autumn moves towards winter, the nights get longer – and that's very good news in Kaikōura.

Our location within the Kaikōura International Dark Sky Sanctuary means there's another whole side of Kaikōura waiting to be discovered once the sun goes down.

Join a stargazing experience or simply find a dark spot, look up and give your eyes a few minutes to adjust.

You might be surprised by just how much you can see.

Slow down. Stay a little longer.

Autumn doesn't shout for your attention. And perhaps that's what makes it so good. It's crisp mornings and long walks. Wildlife encounters and quiet beaches. Great food, golden light and nights beneath the stars. So don't rush through. Stay another night. Explore another track. Find another view.
