Travelling by road

Kaikoura is easily accessibly within a 2hr 40min drive from Christchurch through the beautiful Waipara wine valley and Cheviot.

INLAND ROUTE 70 | Waiau to Kaikōura:  OPEN 24/7

SH1 NORTH | Picton to Kaikōura:  OPEN from 15 Dec during the day. Exact opening hours to be confirmed.

SH1 SOUTH | Christchurch to Kaikōura: OPEN Fri, Sat, Sun & Mon, 7AM-8PM. Road open daily from 15 Dec, closed at night.

Check the latest conditions at least two hours before travel in case of delays and for confirmed daylight hours.

Travelling by coach

InterCity provides daily coach transport between Christchurch and Kaikoura daily.

Local transport in Kaikoura

Rental car and shuttle services are available within Kaikoura.  Contact the i-SITE Visitor Information Centre for more information.

APT touring route

Self-drive visitors can make the most of this beautiful area and enjoy Kaikoura as part of a multi-day scenic drive on the Alpine Pacific Touring route.  This route links Kaikoura with Hanmer Springs Alpine Village and Waipara wine region.

Travelling by air

Scenic flights and charters are available at Kaikoura airport.  Contact the i-SITE Visitor Information Centre for more information.  Christchurch International airport provides both domestic and international services.

Travelling by train

The Coastal Pacific train runs between Christchurch and Picton.  Currently closed for the 2017 season due to the earthquake damage to road and rail north of Kaikoura.
