Kaikoura is easily accessibly within a 2hr 40min drive from Christchurch through the beautiful Waipara wine valley and Cheviot.
The SH1 coastal road to Blenheim and Picton is now open for 24/7 hour travel (day and night-time travel). There will be ongoing roadworks throughout 2018 and we recommend you check the NZTA website here for updated information at least 2 hours before you travel.
The Mt Lyford Inland Route 70 road from Waiau to Kaikoura is open 24/7
The alternate scenic route through Nelson Lakes National Park taking 7hr 30min is open 24/7
InterCity provides daily coach transport between Christchurch and Kaikoura daily.

The Coastal Pacific train runs between Christchurch and Picton. Currently closed for the 2017 season due to the earthquake damage to road and rail north of Kaikoura.
Self-drive visitors can make the most of this beautiful area and enjoy Kaikoura as part of a multi-day scenic drive on the Alpine Pacific Touring route. This route links Kaikoura with Hanmer Springs Alpine Village and Waipara wine region.
