Within just a small area, you'll meet one of the greatest varieties of seabirds you'd find anywhere along the New Zealand coastline.
The list of seabirds sighted off the Kaikōura Coast includes:
5 species of great albatross, up to 7 species of lesser albatross (commonly known as mollymawks), up to 7 species of shearwaters and up 12 species of petrels. Several other species of seabirds including shags, prions, penguins, gulls and terns are frequently sighted.
Small intimate tour with an educational focus described by birding experts as the best short pelagic tour in the world.

The sheer size of the wandering albatross which have the longest wingspan of any bird is a truly impressive sight.
Key information:
- Albatross Encounter operates daily all year round (except Christmas Day).
- Departures: 06:00, 09:00 and 13:00 high season / 10:00 only low season
- Duration: 2.5 hours (approx. 2 hrs on the water)
- The vessel can accommodate 11 pax but a larger vessel can be booked by prior arrangement.

- Some seasonal variation will determine which species are sighted but be assured, a wide range of species is always seen irrespective of when the tour is taken.
