Kaikōura’s location and great weather lends itself to events orientated around the outdoors, fun and the wonderful landscape. We have a number of signature annual events like the 24Hour photography event in August, the Kaikōura Whale Run (half marathon walk/run) and the Kaikōura Hop (cars, cruising, carshow) event in September. Put Kaikōura on your event schedule this season or keep an eye on the calendar when you’re travelling through to discover many interesting things to do in Kaikōura.
Kaikoura’s annual classic car show. The beautiful South Bay in Kaikoura becomes the central meeting place for hundreds of cars, cruising, fun, food and entertainment.
The Rubbish Trip returns to Kaikōura to deliver their flagship presentation about low-waste living and to share a waste-free potluck!
Te Hā o Mātauranga – Learning in Kaikōura and Innovative Waste Kaikoura Ltd invite you to join Hannah and Liam, the Two No-Waste Nomads behind The Rubbish Trip, for an introduction to the practicalities and philosophy of waste reduction. Drawing on their own research and over four years of experience living zero waste, Hannah and Liam will guide you through the whys and the hows of life without a rubbish bin, including:
– What is the zero waste movement? Why is waste reduction important?
– How zero waste principles can revolutionise your perspectives on living and lifestyle, beyond your rubbish bin.
– Innovative examples of waste minimisation policy, practice and thinking from around the globe, and how these might inform community-level waste reduction.
– Tips for how you can reduce the rubbish in your life (including fun DIY household products, cosmetics, and other life hacks).
This event is free; everyone is welcome. We’ll start the event with an (optional) shared waste-free potluck from 5:30pm. Please bring a small kai to share that you have managed to prepare and transport without rubbish or packaging (i.e. avoid packaged foods, cling wrap, tin foil, baking paper etc.).
If you’re not up for the potluck, but keen to hear the presentation, it will start promptly at 6pm!
This talk is part of The Rubbish Trip’s travelling project, taking the zero waste message around Aotearoa New Zealand.
Doors Open 6:15 PM – Wine and Snacks.

Adventure Racing is a sport combining multiple disciplines including trekking, mountain biking, kayaking, and navigation, into a complete journey. Teams race together to overcome challenges and complete the stages back-to-back in the shortest time possible.
The Kaikoura Adventure Race is a traditional adventure race with 12, 6 and 3 hour course lengths on offer. All courses will be designed to ensure that the strongest teams are challenged while still being achievable for all. There will be short course options available to those teams unable to complete the full course in the allotted time.
Located in the Kaikoura District, just 2 hours drive north from Christchurch and 2 hours south from Blenheim, the exact location and course will be kept secret until closer to the event. At the pre-event briefing teams will be provided with marked maps and course notes which will provide valuable insight into the course ahead.
The event is hosted as a fundraiser for adventure racing groups and Kaikoura High School.
