Kaikoura, being an important fishing port, is a mecca for seafood lovers with ample fresh delicacies for all. Local specialties include grouper, cod, mussels, paua (abalone), and of course the towns namesake - Crayfish (lobster).

For those that are unable to catch their own, or just don' t want to spend time cooking while on holiday there are cafes, restaurants, and takeaways (NZ fast food) offering a wide range of meals for a wide range of tastes. They cater from casual to upmarket, from fast foods to organically grown health foods.  Award-winning wine may be tasted at the Kaikoura Winery.
